When is an international driving permit needed outside the EU?

The 1949 Geneva model lasts one year and the 1968 Vienna model three, never beyond the Italian licence.

Requirements outside the EU depend on the destination. The 1949 Geneva permit lasts up to one year; the 1968 Vienna model up to three, never beyond the Italian licence. Japan accepts only the Geneva model. A visitor with a valid Italian licence can drive in the UK without an IDP; Switzerland accepts a valid national licence for its listed categories.

Three destinations, three concrete rules

Italy issues two models: the 1949 Geneva Convention permit is valid for up to one year, while the 1968 Vienna Convention permit is valid for up to three years. Either one expires sooner if the Italian licence expires first. The permit term alone does not determine how long the destination allows you to drive.

Japan recognises only the 1949 Geneva model issued by an authorised body; it does not accept the 1968 Vienna model. Driving is allowed for one year after arrival in Japan or until the permit expires, whichever comes first. For example, a Geneva permit that expires after six months cannot support a full year of driving.

Licence, rental and insurance checks are separate

In the UK, GOV.UK allows visitors with a valid non-UK licence to drive without an IDP; this includes a valid Italian licence. Switzerland’s federal authority recognises a valid national licence for its listed categories; without an international permit, an official translation may be required. Rental companies can ask for additional documents.

Japan, the UK and Switzerland show why there is no single rule for all non-EU destinations. Before travelling, check the destination and transit authorities, licence categories and insurance. Quiz Patente Ufficiale helps you review Italian categories and theory through chapters and quizzes.
