Can I drive in every EU country with an Italian licence?
Yes, a valid Italian licence is recognised in the EU for its listed categories; check expiry, minimum age and destination rules.
Yes. A valid Italian driving licence is recognised in other EU countries for the categories shown on it. Check its expiry date, that your category covers the vehicle, and the destination's minimum age. A learner permit or international driving permit follows different rules and should not be treated as an ordinary EU licence.
Recognition applies to a valid licence
EU rules recognise driving licences issued by a member state when they are valid and have not been suspended or withdrawn. You may drive only vehicles covered by the categories on your document; a category B licence, for example, does not automatically cover every motorcycle or commercial vehicle. Carry the original licence and check its issue and expiry dates before travelling.
Recognition does not turn a learner permit into a full licence. The EU notes that temporary permits, international permits and national certificates are not harmonised in the same way and might not be recognised in another member state. If you hold a learner document, an expired licence or a document with a special condition, ask the authority in the country where you will drive before the trip.
Check the destination and the vehicle
Minimum ages and driving conditions can vary by category and country. Even where your licence is recognised, you must follow local traffic law, signs, vehicle requirements and rules for young drivers. A rental company can add contractual conditions, such as a minimum age or minimum time holding a licence; those conditions do not change the state's recognition of the licence.
Before travelling, check the official page for each EU country on your route and the vehicle documents, including insurance cover. Do not extend a local rule or a rental condition to other countries. Frequently asked questions
Do I need an international permit to drive in the EU?
For an ordinary valid Italian licence, generally no: EU licences are recognised in other member states. Check a learner permit or other non-final document separately.
Does an Italian category B licence let me drive every vehicle?
No. You may drive only vehicles covered by your categories and must follow the destination's minimum-age and local rules.
