My Italian licence expires while I am abroad: may I drive?

An Italian driving licence must be valid for driving; an international permit does not extend its expiry. If your licence expires while you are travelling, do not drive on the expired document. Renewal through an Italian diplomatic or consular authority is available only under specified conditions, including at least six months of residence or stay abroad, and has medical exceptions.

Expiry still applies while you are travelling

Article 126 of the Italian Road Code ties licence validity to the stated expiry date and the required fitness to drive. An international permit accompanies a national licence in countries that require it, but it does not extend the Italian licence. A translation or international permit cannot make an expired national licence valid again.

Check your return date, the licence expiry and the rules of the country where you are staying. Local authorities may require a document that is valid under their law; do not use an international permit as a substitute for an expired national licence.

Renewal abroad is not automatic

For Italian licence holders who have resided or stayed in another country for at least six months, Article 126 provides for confirmation through Italian diplomatic or consular authorities in certain cases, subject to medical checks. Some cases requiring a Local Medical Commission are excluded. If you are abroad for a short trip, do not assume this route is available; ask the competent authority before expiry.

Before travelling, check the expiry date and consider renewing in Italy early enough to complete the medical visit and issue process. For example, if your licence expires halfway through the trip, plan not to drive after that date until you have a valid renewed licence. Booking an appointment or submitting a request does not itself extend the document.
