Which licence do you need to drive an electric microcar?
The approved class determines the licence: AM for light L6e quadricycles and B1 for non-light L7e quadricycles.
Under Italian rules, you need an AM licence for an electric microcar approved as a light L6e quadricycle and within that class’s limits; an L7e non-light quadricycle requires B1. Check the vehicle documents for its class, mass, speed and power: the model name and appearance are not enough.
How to tell AM from B1
An AM licence covers light L6e quadricycles. Their classification depends on type approval and several technical features, including unladen mass, maximum design speed, and engine type and power. A light quadricycle has a general maximum design speed of 45 km/h, and it must also meet the other technical limits for its class. For electric vehicles, the legal definition treats battery mass in a specific way.
B1 covers non-light L7e quadricycles, with an unladen mass of up to 400 kg, or 550 kg for vehicles intended to carry goods, and maximum net power of 15 kW. These figures do not by themselves turn a vehicle into an L7e: its approved category is decisive. A microcar advertised as a “45” may have a different approval, so do not decide from the seller’s speed claim alone.
What to check before driving
Read the registration certificate or vehicle document and find the European vehicle class, usually L6e or L7e. Compare it with the licence you hold and check that the vehicle’s actual configuration matches its approval. If the document is unclear, ask the seller or a competent office to identify the class. A small engine or electric motor does not settle the question on its own.
For example, two electric microcars with similar bodies may require different licences. An L6e vehicle fits AM only while it meets every parameter of that class; an L7e vehicle requires B1. A category B licence also covers relevant quadricycles, but drivers with only AM or B1 must not infer the licence from the everyday name of the vehicle. Check the authorised number of seats and passenger rules before travelling too.

Frequently asked questions
Can every electric microcar be driven with AM?
No. AM covers an L6e-approved quadricycle that meets the class’s technical limits. If the documents identify it as L7e, you need B1 or a higher licence that covers it.
Is a maximum speed of 45 km/h enough?
No. Speed is only one parameter. Check the class, mass and motor characteristics in the vehicle’s approval and registration documents.
