Do I always need an Italian boating licence for a personal watercraft?
Yes. MIT requires a boating licence to operate a personal watercraft, regardless of engine power.
Yes. In Italy, a boating licence is required to operate a personal watercraft regardless of engine power. The D1 category is a specific entitlement available from age 16, with limits: daytime navigation and personal watercraft within one nautical mile of shore; before age 18, additional restrictions on the licence apply.
The requirement does not depend on horsepower
MIT lists operation of personal watercraft among the cases requiring a boating licence, without tying the obligation to engine power. The 30 kW or displacement thresholds apply to other craft within six miles; they do not make a low-powered personal watercraft licence-free. Renting, owning the craft or staying close to shore does not remove the requirement.
Category D type D1 allows daytime operation of a personal watercraft within one nautical mile of shore from age 16. Until age 18, D1 is additionally restricted to pleasure craft and personal watercraft; it does not authorise the other craft listed for adults. Always check the actual licence and its conditions.
Follow navigation limits as well
The licence addresses the driver's entitlement, but it does not replace local rules, safety equipment, speed limits, rental conditions or Coast Guard orders. Personal watercraft have navigation and conduct restrictions. Before leaving, consult the maritime authority’s instructions and verify the specific entitlement you hold.
If you are under 18 or hold D1, do not apply the general category A rules: remain within the daytime and distance limits printed for that entitlement. If unsure about age, licence or permitted area, ask the rental operator and Coast Guard before setting out.
Quiz Patente Ufficiale can help you review Italian boating theory and rules; check the licence, limits and Coast Guard orders before operating a personal watercraft.
