How to check your driving-licence points balance online

You can check your points balance on the Portale dell’Automobilista and through services listed by MIT. Compare it with any notices you have received.

You can check your penalty-points balance through the online services on the Portale dell’Automobilista, using the available sign-in methods, or through channels listed by MIT. If you notice an unexpected change, compare it with the penalty notice and contact the authority that recorded the offence.

Sign in to the official service

The Portale dell’Automobilista provides a points-balance service in its online services section. Open the official website, select the relevant service and complete the required sign-in, for example with an available digital identity. Avoid unofficial websites or apps that ask for your login details or payment to show public information.

MIT’s page on the penalty-points system explains that changes can be checked through the Portale. Once signed in, check that your personal details and selected document are correct, especially if you hold more than one licence. If the service is unavailable or the data will not load, try the Portale again and use its stated support channel.

Interpret the balance carefully

The system starts from the points assigned to your licence and records deductions for specified offences. A recently issued penalty notice does not always mean points will be deducted immediately: MIT says the balance is updated once the offence is final. Check the date on the notice and the status of any appeal.

The balance shown is based on information entered by the police authority that recorded the offence. If you spot an anomaly, keep a screenshot or confirmation, note the date you checked and contact the authority named on the notice for clarification. The Portale does not replace a formal challenge to a penalty.

If your balance is low

If you have lost points but your balance is not zero, ask about approved point-recovery courses. MIT specifies how many points can be recovered for different licence categories and explains how to obtain a statement or printout of your balance to take to the course provider. Ask an authorised driving school for its programme and schedule.

If your balance reaches zero, the situation is different: the Highway Code provides for a licence review and a technical fitness test. Follow the notice you receive; do not wait for an informal update to resolve the matter. You can use a quiz app to keep your theory fresh, but the official balance and administrative decisions are authoritative.

Quiz Patente Ufficiale offers chapters, exam-style quizzes and mistake review to help you practise the rules, but it does not show your penalty-points balance.

Frequently asked questions

Is the balance updated as soon as I get a fine?

Not necessarily. MIT says the deduction is recorded once the case is final, for example after the appeal period ends or an appeal is decided. The points may therefore appear later than the date on the notice.

Does it cost anything to check my points?

The Portale dell’Automobilista service allows online consultation. Check the official website for current sign-in options and do not pay unauthorised intermediaries.
