Renewing your licence
Can you renew your driving licence after surgery?
Surgery does not determine the renewal outcome by itself. A doctor assesses recovery and fitness to drive and may refer you to the Local Medical Commission.
There is no single answer that applies to everyone after surgery: fitness to drive must be assessed by an authorised doctor and, if necessary, by the Local Medical Commission (CML). Ask your surgeon when you can drive again, and follow medical advice and administrative requirements separately.
Clinical safety comes first
The type of surgery, recovery time, medication and abilities needed for driving vary greatly from one case to another. Do not rely on a relative’s experience or a standard number of days. Ask your surgeon or GP when you can get back behind the wheel and which symptoms or limitations mean you should wait.
Even if your licence has not expired, you must follow medical advice about when to resume driving. If your treatment causes drowsiness, slower reactions or difficulty moving, ask for guidance before using a car. This guide cannot determine your fitness to drive or replace an individual clinical assessment.
How to approach the renewal
At your renewal appointment, tell the doctor about the surgery and bring any reports requested. The authorised practitioner will assess whether a routine examination is sufficient or whether your case should be referred to the Local Medical Commission. The CML may request specific tests or certificates before making a decision.
Do not send complete medical records to an agency without checking why they are needed and who will receive them. Ask the office which documents are required, in what format and how recently they must have been issued. If specialist checks are needed, get instructions from the CML or the doctor handling your renewal.
Expiry and permission to drive
Check the expiry date on your licence and arrange renewal early, especially if referral to a CML is likely. An appointment does not authorise you to drive after expiry. MIT provides for a temporary permit in certain cases where a CML appointment is unavailable before expiry; you must request and obtain it from the Commission.
If the assessment is positive, keep the confirmation receipt and follow the instructions for delivery of your new card. MIT states that the receipt allows you to drive in Italy until the licence arrives. Read any restrictions and ask your doctor how to follow them; an administrative decision does not override clinical advice about recovery.
To practise the theory, Quiz Patente Ufficiale provides chapter-based study, exam-style quizzes and mistake review to help you practise the theory; it does not assess medical fitness to drive.
Frequently asked questions
How many days after surgery can I drive?
There is no universal interval. It depends on the operation, recovery, treatment and abilities needed for driving. Ask your surgeon or doctor, who knows your case, before driving again.
Does surgery automatically mean a referral to the CML?
No. Whether a CML assessment is needed depends on your clinical circumstances and the applicable rules. After reviewing your documents, the authorised doctor or Commission can tell you which process applies.
