Expired driving licence: can you drive to your renewal appointment?

Booking a renewal appointment does not allow you to drive with an expired licence. There is a specific documented exception for Local Medical Commission cases.

If your licence has expired, do not drive, even to attend a renewal appointment: the appointment does not replace a valid licence. In a specific situation, you may request a temporary permit from the Local Medical Commission (CML), but you can drive only after it has been issued.

A booked appointment is not enough

Check the expiry date printed on your document. If it has passed, do not drive just because you have booked an appointment or paid the renewal fee. Article 126 of the Highway Code governs licence validity and the consequences of driving with an expired licence; for your specific situation, refer to the current law and official notices.

A receipt issued after a successful medical examination is different: it is provided after online confirmation and, according to MIT, allows you to drive in Italy until your new licence arrives. You cannot get the same authorisation by showing only an appointment booking, confirmation email or payment receipt.

When to request a temporary permit

MIT provides a specific option for drivers who must renew through a Local Medical Commission and cannot book an appointment before their licence expires: they can ask the CML for a temporary permit valid until the procedure is completed. The Commission issues the permit and states its conditions.

Contact the CML handling your case as soon as the problem arises. Ask which forms and proof of your appointment are needed, whether a permit is available in your case and when it would take effect. Do not drive until you have received the document and checked that it is valid; this rule does not automatically apply to every medical appointment or delay.

Arrange another way to travel

If you have not received valid authorisation, ask someone to take you, use a taxi or public transport, or rearrange the appointment. If the appointment is far away, consider travelling before your licence expires or ask the clinic whether it can offer an option that fits your situation. Cost or inconvenience does not turn an appointment into permission to drive.

After renewal, keep the receipt issued by the doctor and carry it with you. MIT limits the receipt’s validity to Italy and the period before your new licence is delivered. When the card arrives, check the category, any codes and the expiry date, then update your reminder for the next renewal.

Frequently asked questions

Can I drive if I have already paid and booked the appointment?

No. Payment and an appointment do not extend your licence. You may drive with a confirmation receipt issued after a successful medical examination, or with a specific temporary permit if the CML has issued one in a case covered by the rules.

Is the receipt issued after the examination valid abroad?

No. MIT says the receipt is valid for driving in Italy until your new licence arrives. For travel outside Italy, wait for the licence and check the destination country’s requirements.
