Should you check the spare wheel?

Yes. Check the spare wheel regularly too, following the vehicle-specific pressure and instructions.

Yes. The spare wheel needs checking because it can lose pressure even when unused. Check the pressure and procedure specified by the manufacturer, inspect its condition, and make sure it is accessible and properly secured in its compartment.

Check the specified pressure and type of wheel

Read the vehicle handbook and label: the spare wheel may have different specifications and pressure from the four tyres fitted to the car. Do not automatically use the front or rear tyre pressure. Some cars have a temporary spare with specific speed and distance limits.

Check its age and visible condition too: cracks, distortion or damage can make it unusable. If the vehicle has a repair kit instead of a spare wheel, check its expiry date and contents in line with the manufacturer’s instructions. Do not buy a replacement based only on its apparent diameter: its size and compatibility must match the vehicle.

Check that it is accessible and that the tools are there

Make sure the wheel and tools are present, securely fastened and reachable without having to unload objects in a dangerous place by the roadside. Check the jack, wheel brace and adapters specified by the manufacturer, but do not practise changing a wheel on a slope or near traffic. If you get a puncture, put people’s safety first.

Many temporary spare wheels can only be fitted in a particular position or used for a limited distance. The handbook explains where to fit one, which limits to observe and when to reach a repairer. If you are not confident about changing the wheel, call roadside assistance.

Add the spare to your regular checks

Whenever you check the pressure of the main tyres, include the spare wheel if there is one. Measure it when cold, using a gauge and the correct pressure. If the compartment is hard to open or the wheel is difficult to remove, sort this out before a long journey.

After using the spare, have the main tyre repaired or replaced and restore the vehicle’s equipment. A temporary spare is not intended to replace a normal tyre for weeks. Before putting it back, ask a tyre specialist to check its pressure, condition and compatibility.

Frequently asked questions

Should the spare wheel have the same pressure as the other tyres?

Not necessarily. Some temporary spare wheels require a specific pressure. Check the vehicle label and handbook; these take precedence over general advice.

Does every car have a spare wheel?

No. Some models come with a repair kit or other equipment. Check the compartment and handbook to see what is provided and how to use it.
