Quiz patente sui rimorchi: come distinguere B, B96 e BE

To choose between B, B96 and BE, compare the authorised maximum mass of the trailer and the whole combination.

The difference between B, B96 and BE depends on the authorised maximum masses of the vehicle and combination. With B, a trailer over 750 kg is allowed only if the combination stays within 3,500 kg; B96 extends the combination limit to 4,250 kg, while BE covers combinations above that threshold with a trailer of up to 3,500 kg.

Check the trailer mass, then the total

Category B allows a trailer up to 750 kg; if the trailer exceeds 750 kg, the combination remains within B when its authorised maximum mass does not exceed 3,500 kg. The calculation uses the authorised maximum masses shown for the vehicle and trailer, not the load’s temporary weight on a particular trip.

Code 96 allows a combination above 3,500 kg and up to 4,250 kg, subject to the applicable conditions. Category BE covers a category B vehicle with a trailer or semi-trailer over 750 kg when the combination exceeds 4,250 kg; the trailer must not exceed 3,500 kg. To apply the rule, add the authorised masses and check the trailer’s own limit.

Solve questions without mixing thresholds

In a quiz, write down the vehicle mass, trailer mass and combined mass separately. Then proceed in order: check whether the trailer exceeds 750 kg, add the authorised masses and compare the result with 3,500 and 4,250 kg. Do not confuse B96 and BE: the former covers a combination within the extended limit, while the latter applies to combinations over 4,250 kg under its conditions.

If a question does not state the trailer’s authorised maximum mass, do not infer it from appearance. Check the vehicle documents and consult the relevant Ministry page for an actual case. Quiz Patente Ufficiale can help you practise trailer-mass questions and review errors; before driving, check that the licence and combination documents match.
