Come memorizzare i segnali stradali per l’esame patente
Group signs by shape and function, then check each symbol’s meaning in the Code and its regulation.
The Highway Code divides vertical signs into categories, and the regulation defines their shapes, colours and symbols. You can group them by function and appearance to study, but shape alone is not enough: read the symbol and context to identify the requirement it communicates.
Start with categories and shapes
Article 39 organises vertical signs into warning, regulatory and information signs. The category gives you a starting point: warning signs alert you to a situation requiring care; regulatory signs can establish priority, prohibitions or obligations; information signs provide useful traffic information. The regulation specifies the appearance and meaning of individual signs.
As a study method, first observe shape and colour, then describe the symbol without looking at a caption, and finally check its meaning in the official text. A warning triangle, for example, signals a hazard, while its pictogram identifies which one; a regulatory circle can have different functions depending on its colours and symbols. Do not infer the answer from the outline without reading the full sign.
Consolidate with targeted comparisons
Compare similar signs and look for the detail that changes: inner colour, border, arrow, bar or pictogram. Then formulate the required conduct and answer questions on the topic. If an additional panel appears, read it with the main sign because it can specify distance, time or scope.
Visual grouping is a memory aid, not a separate traffic rule. For questions about meaning, consult Article 39 and the regulation; do not associate a colour with an answer without considering the entire sign. Quiz Patente Ufficiale can help you practise sign questions and review mistakes, checking whether you recognise both the category and the actual requirement.

Frequently asked questions
Is remembering the shape enough to identify a sign?
No. Shape and colour help identify a category, but the symbol and context determine the precise meaning.
How can I memorise similar signs?
Compare the visual details that differ, describe the requirement, and check its meaning in the Code and regulation.
