Penalty points and fines
How do driving licence points recovery courses work?
Approved courses can restore points if your balance has not reached zero; the MIT sets out the rules and eligible licence categories.
If you have lost points but your balance has not reached zero, you can recover some by attending a course at a driving school or centre authorised by the MIT. Your licence category determines how many points can be restored; before enrolling, obtain the required notice or proof of your current balance.
Check your balance and the course first
Log in to the Portale dell’Automobilista and check your current points balance. The MIT allows drivers to attend a course while their balance is above zero and sets different recovery amounts for groups of licence categories: the standard course for AM, A and B categories restores a different number of points from courses for professional categories or qualifications.
Choose a driving school or centre authorised by the Ministry and confirm that its course is valid for your category. Before you enrol, the centre may ask for the notice sent through the Portale or a printout of your balance issued by the Motorizzazione. The MIT says that paper letters are no longer sent automatically.
Attend the course and complete the requirements
Ask the centre for the syllabus, timetable, attendance requirements and final assessment procedure. Article 126-bis links point recovery to attending the course and completing the required assessment; paying the fee or receiving course materials is not enough. Keep your certificate and correspondence until the points have been updated.
The number of points you can recover depends on your licence or qualification and the rules in force. Ask the centre which course applies to your licence, especially if you hold several categories or a CQC. If your balance changes while you are attending, tell the driving school and check that the course is still appropriate.
If you have lost all your points
A recovery course is not the procedure for a zero balance. In that case, the Highway Code requires a licence review and a technical fitness test. Follow the notice sent by the authority and ask the Motorizzazione about the required steps, deadlines and exam arrangements.
Do not confuse personal revision with a course that counts for administrative purposes: only authorised providers can run the required course. A quiz app can help you revise road signs and rules, but it cannot certify attendance or update the national register. Check your official balance after the results have been reported.
Quiz Patente Ufficiale offers chapters, practice tests and a review of your mistakes to help you study the theory, but it does not issue point-recovery certificates.
Frequently asked questions
How many points can I recover by taking a course?
The MIT distinguishes between categories: a course restores the number of points provided for your licence or qualification, with different amounts for ordinary and professional licences. Check the current guidance and confirm with an authorised centre before enrolling.
Can I take the course with a zero balance?
The MIT’s course rules apply while your points balance has not reached zero. With no points remaining, the Highway Code requires a licence review and technical fitness test; check the notice you received.
