Roadworthiness test result: what does “retest” mean?
A “retest” result means you must repair the listed faults and present the vehicle for another test within the required deadline.
Read the recorded result and identify what needs to be fixed. The MIT says the vehicle must be repaired and inspected again under the applicable procedure.
Read the roadworthiness test report
If the test result says “retest”, the vehicle has not passed without qualification. The MIT says to repair the systems reported as inefficient and present the vehicle for another test within one month. Read the report carefully to identify the recorded defects and ask the centre to explain what you need to do next.
Do not just fix the most obvious fault or switch off a warning light. Repairs must address the components listed and meet the vehicle’s specifications. Keep the report, garage invoice and proof of your new booking. If the wording or deadline is unclear, ask the testing centre or the Motorizzazione for confirmation.
Before using the vehicle again
Whether you may drive after a “retest” result depends on the wording on the report and the rules in force. The MIT says that if a suspension is recorded, the vehicle remains suspended from circulation until it passes a new test. Do not assume that you can drive freely for a month: check the document and ask the authority or centre what is allowed in your case.
If the vehicle is unsafe or the result includes a suspension, do not use it on the road; arrange transport or assistance in line with the official instructions. Do not drive it to a garage until you have confirmed that the journey is permitted. A short trip does not cancel the suspension or the technical risk.
Book and keep proof of the retest
Contact the testing centre to book a retest within the deadline and ask which documents you need. Check whether you must provide receipts or evidence of repairs. At the new test, keep the updated result and check that it is correctly recorded in the system. Do not rely only on a calendar reminder to decide whether the vehicle is roadworthy again.
If the result says “retest”, read which defects were recorded and have them repaired. The vehicle must be tested again within the deadline set by the applicable rules; check the report to see whether you may drive only to the garage or testing centre. Book the retest and keep the first report.
Quiz Patente Ufficiale helps you revise the rules by chapter, take timed practice tests and review your mistakes; for a roadworthiness test result, follow the report and MIT guidance.
Frequently asked questions
How long do I have to take the roadworthiness test again?
The MIT gives one month to repair and present the vehicle again; check the result and the procedure that applies to your case.
Can I drive as usual until the retest?
Do not assume that you can: the report may record a suspension. Read the note and confirm with the centre or Motorizzazione.
