Does a motorcycle carrier trailer require B96 or BE?
The car and trailer maximum authorised masses decide; also check the vehicle’s towing and loading limits.
To decide whether a motorcycle carrier trailer needs B, B96 or BE in Italy, add the car and trailer maximum authorised masses, not their kerb weights. If the total exceeds 3,500 kg and is no more than 4,250 kg, code 96 may be required; above that, BE may be needed. In every case, the car must be approved to tow the loaded carrier.
Calculate from the documents
The licence category depends on the maximum authorised masses recorded for the car and trailer. An empty carrier or a single motorcycle does not automatically change that calculation. Category B covers a trailer up to 750 kg; for a heavier trailer, the authorised combination must remain within 3,500 kg. Code 96, after a specific test, covers combinations above 3,500 kg and up to 4,250 kg. For combinations above that limit, consider BE, with a trailer authorised up to 3,500 kg.
For example, if the car is authorised at 2,100 kg and the carrier at 1,200 kg, the total is 3,300 kg even if both weigh less today. If the authorised figures are 2,500 and 1,700 kg, the 4,200 kg total is in the B96 range if all other requirements are met.
Check towing, loading and motorcycle restraints
The licence calculation is only one check. The car's registration document must allow that trailer and combination; do not exceed the carrier's payload, tow-bar mass or axle limits. Secure the motorcycle with suitable restraints without obscuring lights, the registration plate or visibility.
Before travelling, check the electrical connection, tyres, restraints and load distribution. If the carrier has unreadable data or the car allows a lower mass, confirm compatibility with a professional or the Motorizzazione. A small trailer is not automatically treated as light for licence purposes: the authorised figures on the documents control.
Quiz Patente Ufficiale helps you review Italian B, code 96 and BE theory; confirm carrier compatibility and motorcycle restraints using the documents and a professional.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use the carrier’s kerb weight to choose my licence?
No. Add the maximum authorised masses of car and trailer; actual loading must separately stay within the payload limits.
Does B96 let me exceed the car’s towing limit?
No. Code 96 expands the driver's entitlement within its mass range; it does not change the car's type approval or towing capacity.
