Renewing your licence
Renewing a driving licence through the Local Medical Commission: what to bring
The Local Medical Commission may require different documents depending on why you are being assessed. Follow your appointment notice and ask for the latest list in advance.
For a renewal through the Local Medical Commission, bring the appointment notice, driving licence, ID and health card, then add the reports requested by the Commission. There is no standard medical file for everyone: the list depends on the reason for the assessment.
Read the appointment notice and confirm what is required
The first source to check is the notice from the Commission handling your case. Confirm the location, time, category concerned and how to attend. If it is unclear which reports are needed or how recently they must have been issued, contact the CML office before booking appointments or incurring costs.
Prepare your driving licence, ID, tax code and appointment notice. The Commission may require specialist certificates or tests related to your health; these requirements differ between drivers. Bring originals or copies in the requested format and keep booking receipts. Do not send medical information to unofficial addresses.
Explain your situation fully
During the appointment, tell the medical staff about changes in your health, treatments and any limitations that affect driving, and let them assess your case. Bring a clear list of your medicines and the requested up-to-date reports. Do not stop treatment to prepare for the assessment, and do not treat a personal declaration as a substitute for a medical certificate.
The CML may request further assessments, impose restrictions or defer its decision until it receives the necessary documents. Ask what happens next and how you will be told the result. If you disagree with the decision, the Portale dell’Automobilista also lists the appeal procedure: check the deadline and addressee directly in the official notice.
Manage your expiry date while you wait
If you cannot get an appointment before your licence expires, the MIT says that drivers renewing through a CML may ask the Commission for a temporary driving permit, valid until the procedure is completed. You must request it from the CML and have it issued: showing a booking or appointment notice is not enough.
After a successful assessment, keep the receipt given by the doctor and track delivery of your new licence. The receipt issued after confirmation is valid for driving in Italy until the document arrives. Before driving, check any restrictions or limitations resulting from the assessment.
Quiz Patente Ufficiale helps you revise the rules of the road with chapter-by-chapter study, practice tests and a review of your mistakes.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use the document list from another CML?
Use it only as a general guide: the appointment notice and instructions from the Commission handling your case take precedence. Requirements vary according to the medical condition, licence category and assessment.
What should I do if my appointment is after my licence expires?
Contact the CML and ask whether you can obtain the temporary permit described by the MIT in your case. Do not drive until you have received valid authorisation; a booking alone does not extend your licence.
