Renewing your licence
How to renew an Italian licence while living abroad
After at least six months of residence or stay abroad, you may contact an Italian diplomatic or consular authority, subject to exceptions.
If you have lived or stayed in another country for at least six months, Article 126 allows an Italian licence to be confirmed through an Italian diplomatic or consular authority in certain circumstances. Some cases requiring a Local Medical Commission are excluded. Check with the competent authority before expiry: this route is not automatic and depends on residence and medical circumstances.
The six-month condition
Article 126 of the Italian Road Code allows holders of an Italian licence who have resided or stayed in another country for at least six months to seek confirmation through Italian diplomatic or consular authorities present there. The procedure includes an assessment of physical and mental fitness by doctors trusted by the embassy or consulate. A specific certificate is issued and serves as evidence of that assessment during the period abroad.
The law also provides exceptions. Not every case can use this route, particularly some medical situations referred to in Article 119 that require a Local Medical Commission. Living abroad or having an appointment is therefore not enough by itself: confirm your residence, the length of stay and your medical circumstances with the competent authority.
What happens when you return
The law also provides that a person who renewed through an Italian diplomatic or consular authority in a country outside the EU or EEA must renew under the ordinary procedure within six months of reacquiring residence in Italy. This is a specific condition for returning residents, not a deadline that applies indiscriminately to every renewal performed abroad.
Before arranging the process, tell the consular authority your licence category, expiry date and residence situation, and ask which checks and documents apply. For example, someone who has been abroad for four months does not yet meet the six-month condition described in Article 126. Do not drive after expiry based on an unanswered request or an appointment that has not been completed.
