Airbag warning light on: can you keep using the car?

An illuminated airbag warning light signals a fault that needs checking. Consult the handbook and arrange assistance, as the safety systems may not work as intended.

The restraint systems may be compromised when a warning appears. Do not cover the light or disconnect components to make it disappear.

What the warning light means

The airbag light normally comes on for an initial check and then goes out if the system detects no faults; the exact behaviour depends on the model. If it stays on, flashes or appears while driving, consult the handbook. The airbags and seat-belt pretensioners may have limited functionality or may not deploy as intended in a collision.

Continue driving only if the vehicle remains controllable and there are no other danger signs, but arrange a check as soon as possible. Do not assume the car is safe for a long journey or put off diagnosis indefinitely. The handbook may say whether you need to stop or whether you can drive carefully to a garage.

Do not repair or disable the system yourself

Do not dismantle the steering wheel, seats, connectors or covers marked for airbags. Do not disconnect the battery to clear the warning, and do not fit accessories that may interfere with sensors or wiring. Work on pyrotechnic safety devices requires trained staff and specific procedures.

If the warning appeared after a collision, repair or cleaning beneath a seat, tell the garage what happened. Ask for the complete system to be diagnosed and keep a record of the work. Do not rely on a simple reset if the cause has not been identified.

Protect everyone in the vehicle

Always use seat belts and suitable restraints; the belt remains essential even when airbags are working. For a child seat, consult both the car and seat manuals, particularly the instructions about the passenger airbag. Do not put a rear-facing child seat in front of an active airbag if the manufacturer prohibits it.

The airbag light may come on during the start-up check and then go out. If it stays on or appears while driving, the restraint system may not work correctly in a collision. Arrange a technical check and do not disconnect the connectors beneath the seats: the system contains pyrotechnic devices.

Frequently asked questions

Can I clear the warning by disconnecting the battery?

No. The warning needs to be diagnosed; clearing it does not fix a possible system fault.

Do I need a seat belt if the car has airbags?

Yes. The seat belt is essential and must always be used in accordance with the Italian Highway Code and the handbook.
