Which sign marks the start of a main extra-urban road in Italy?
The motorway symbol on a blue background marks a type B road; the motorway sign has a green background.
The start sign for an Italian main extra-urban road uses the same stylised road symbol as the motorway sign, but on a blue background; the motorway sign is green. This marks a type B road, not a motorway. Access and speed rules follow the category and any additional signs.
Recognise the category sign
The sign looks like the motorway sign: it shows the same stylised road symbol, but the background is blue for a main extra-urban road and green for a motorway. The end sign adds a diagonal red bar. These signs mark the start or end of the type B section.
A divided carriageway or an interchange alone does not prove that a road is type B. The Code also describes technical features such as separate carriageways, at least two lanes in each direction, no at-grade intersections, and coordinated access. The category and its sign must be considered together.
Follow the rules for that section
Once on a type B road, the general speed limit is 110 km/h, with a general maximum of 90 km/h in precipitation. A lower posted limit takes precedence. Article 117 also sets a personal 90 km/h limit for the first three years after certain licences, and Article 175 restricts access for specific vehicle categories.
Temporary signs, lane controls, and restrictions for a particular section still apply. When the road changes category, the end sign signals that the previous rules may no longer apply in the same way. Adjust your speed and route according to the signs actually present.
When the route is called a ring road
A route described as a ring road can contain type B and urban sections. The local name does not establish the category. If your route crosses several junctions, observe the start and end signs and check whether access restrictions change from one section to the next.
Do not use a map label as a substitute for the signs at the entrance. If you are driving a vehicle with restricted access, such as a moped, confirm the section’s category before joining it and choose an allowed alternative if the signs or classification are unclear.
To review Italian road categories, signs, and speed rules, Quiz Patente Ufficiale offers theory chapters, exam quizzes, and error review.
Frequently asked questions
Is the type B start sign the same as the motorway sign?
It uses the same stylised road symbol, but on a blue background; the motorway symbol has a green background.
Can I identify the road only from its divided lanes?
No. The road must have the characteristics and signs specified by the Italian Highway Code and its regulation.
