Your first public charge: how to use an electric-car charging point

For your first public charge, check the connector, compatible charging power and payment method, then follow the operator’s instructions.

Charging depends on the car and the charging point. Check the vehicle’s socket, access to the service and the terms before starting a session.

Check compatibility

Before setting off, check the vehicle handbook to see which connectors it supports and what charging limits apply. In the operator’s app or on its website, check that the point is public, working and accessible at the time you expect to arrive. The power shown on the charging point does not guarantee that the car can use all of it: this depends on the equipment and the model.

Also check where the point is and whether the bay is reserved for charging. A third-party app may show availability that is out of date; consider the status shown by the operator and check on arrival. Bring your own cable only if the point requires one: some systems have a tethered cable, while others need one that is compatible with the car.

Start the session as instructed by the operator

Read the display and signs, then activate the charging point using the app, card or payment method provided. Connect the cable as instructed for the vehicle and station; do not use unauthorised adapters or force the socket. Wait for confirmation that the session has started and check that the car shows it is charging.

Before confirming, check the price of electricity, any parking or idle fees, and the conditions for ending the session. Costs and payment methods vary between networks and charging points. If the display shows an error, do not repeat the process several times without checking whether a session has already started: check the app and contact customer service.

Finish and leave the bay clear

To finish, use the controls specified by the operator and wait for the cable to unlock. If the socket remains locked, consult the handbook and support service; do not pull hard. After unplugging, put the cable back on its holder and move the car in accordance with the bay rules. Keep the receipt or session record.

Find a charging point that matches the car’s socket and check its power, availability and cost before you start. Connect the cable as instructed, start the session using the app, card or payment card, and check the display to confirm that charging has begun. To finish, unlock the socket using the car’s or operator’s control before unplugging.

Frequently asked questions

Do I always need to bring my own cable?

No. Some points have a tethered cable; others require a cable compatible with the vehicle. Check the charging point details.

Will the most powerful charging point always charge faster?

Not necessarily: the car’s capabilities, the charging station and battery conditions all matter.
