Tyre repair kit: how to tell whether it is safe to use
A kit should be used only in the conditions specified by its manufacturer. Assess the damage away from traffic and follow the handbook and stated limits.
Not every puncture or damaged tyre can be repaired with a kit. Whether it can be used depends on the damage’s location and extent, the instructions and the condition of the tyre.
Put the car in a safe place first
If you notice a puncture, slow down without braking sharply and reach a safe area. On a motorway or busy road, do not stop in a lane or an exposed lay-by. Follow the emergency procedure and move away from traffic if you can do so safely; call for assistance if you cannot find a protected place.
Do not use the kit while the car is unstable, on a dangerous slope or close to traffic. Do not put your hand into the tread or remove an embedded object if the handbook says to leave the assessment to a technician. A cut sidewall, a burst tyre or a damaged wheel may make sealant unsuitable.
Read the instructions and product limits
The inflator and repair kit is intended for emergencies and only for damage permitted by the vehicle and kit instructions. Check the stated procedure, speed limit and maximum distance, then reach a tyre specialist or roadside assistance as soon as possible. Limits vary by product: do not rely on a figure remembered from another car or seen in a video.
If the wheel will not hold pressure, the damage is visible or the warning light continues to indicate a problem, do not continue. Do not repeat the treatment beyond the instructions. Tell the technician that you used sealant: it may affect whether and how the tyre can be repaired and the work needed to clean it.
After the temporary repair
A kit is not a permanent repair and does not authorise you to use the vehicle normally for days. Follow the manufacturer’s limits until the tyre has been checked, then have it repaired or replaced based on a professional assessment. Keep the kit and check its expiry date and compatibility with your model.
A sealant kit is suitable only for damage allowed by the kit manufacturer, usually a small puncture in the tread. Do not use it for a cut in the sidewall, a damaged wheel or a tyre that has come off the rim. After applying it, observe the stated distance and speed limits and go to a tyre specialist; do not continue your journey as normal.
Quiz Patente Ufficiale offers theory chapters, timed quizzes and error review; follow the kit and vehicle limits when using a repair kit.
