Motorhome: does category B still suffice after loading it?

The licence depends on maximum authorised mass; actual load must stay within total and axle limits.

For an Italian motorhome, the licence category depends on its maximum authorised mass in the documents: up to 3,500 kg is within category B; over 3,500 kg and up to 7,500 kg may require C1, while above 7,500 kg C may be needed. When loaded for travel, the motorhome must still stay within its authorised mass and axle limits. A licence does not increase the vehicle’s payload.

Check the authorised figure, not kerb weight

A motorhome may seem light when empty, but accessories, passengers, water, luggage and equipment add weight on a trip. To choose the licence category, check the maximum authorised mass in its registration document, not an occasional scale reading. Category B covers motor vehicles up to 3,500 kg; C1 generally covers those over 3,500 kg and up to 7,500 kg, except vehicles designed to carry more passengers that fall into D categories.

A motorhome authorised at 3,500 kg may fit category B even if its actual trip weight is lower. If its document authorises 3,850 kg, B alone is insufficient for driving it as an ordinary motor vehicle: check C1 and the vehicle's type approval and codes.

Stay within total and axle limits

The licence and permitted weight are separate checks. Even with C1 or C, you may not exceed the motorhome's maximum authorised mass or axle limits. A load concentrated at the rear can exceed the rear axle limit even if the total seems acceptable. Accessories fitted after registration may reduce the remaining allowance for passengers and luggage.

Before travelling, check the manufacturer's manual and approval data, estimate added equipment and distribute the load. If unsure, weigh the motorhome in travel condition and ask a specialist workshop to interpret axle limits. Weighing helps assess actual use; it does not change the licence category determined by the maximum authorised mass.

Quiz Patente Ufficiale helps you review Italian licence categories and theory; check the motorhome’s actual load and axle masses in its documents and with a weigh-in.

Frequently asked questions

If the loaded motorhome weighs less than 3,500 kg, can I drive it with B?

The licence category is determined by the motorhome's maximum authorised mass in its documents, not the weight of a particular trip.

Does C1 let me load a motorhome beyond the written limit?

No. The licence covers a vehicle category, but the motorhome must remain within its authorised mass and axle limits.
