What speed limit applies after the end-of-motorway sign in Italy?
The 130 km/h motorway maximum does not continue automatically; follow the limit for the next road and its signs.
After the Italian end-of-motorway sign, do not assume that the motorway’s 130 km/h maximum still applies. Follow the limit for the next road: generally 110 km/h on a main extra-urban road or 90 km/h on a secondary one, unless signs set a lower limit or conditions require less.
The next road sets the general maximum
The end-of-motorway sign marks a change in the road category. The general maximum of 130 km/h applies to motorways; Article 142 sets 110 km/h for main extra-urban roads and 90 km/h for secondary extra-urban roads. A sign on the section can impose a lower speed, which you must follow.
Under precipitation, the general maximum falls to 110 km/h on motorways and 90 km/h on main extra-urban roads. If the road after the motorway is a different category, use the limit for that category as well as the posted signs. Roadworks, traffic, visibility, or a wet surface may require further reduction.
Watch for a change of category
After the end sign, look for the signs identifying the next road and any speed limit. A route may continue as a main extra-urban road, become a secondary road, or enter an urban area. Do not wait until reaching the next sign to reduce speed if the road layout or conditions already require it.
A navigation app’s estimate does not replace the road signs. If you are uncertain whether the road is type B, type C, or urban, use the category signs and follow any posted limit while you clarify the route.
Apply personal limits too
During the first three years after obtaining an A2, A, B1, or B licence, Article 117 sets a personal maximum of 100 km/h on motorways and 90 km/h on main extra-urban roads. A lower posted limit still prevails. Other vehicle categories can also have their own statutory speed limits.
For example, if the motorway ends and the route continues on a type B road with a sign showing 80, the maximum is 80, even if the general limit would be 110. A driver covered by a lower personal restriction must apply that lower value too.

Frequently asked questions
Can I keep driving at 130 km/h after the motorway sign?
No. The general motorway maximum does not carry over automatically. Apply the limit for the road ahead and any lower posted restriction.
What if there is no new speed-limit sign?
Use the general maximum for the road’s legal category, while adjusting further to weather, traffic, visibility, and any personal or vehicle-specific limit.
