Who may use the motorway emergency lane in Italy?

It is not a traffic lane: use it only for permitted emergencies and the specific exit manoeuvre allowed in a queue.

The emergency lane is not an extra lane for avoiding traffic. Article 176 allows it for an emergency stop and certain other specific cases; in a traffic queue, it may be used only to leave the motorway, starting from the advance sign placed 500 metres before the exit.

The emergency lane is not for normal driving

Article 176 prohibits driving and stopping on the motorway emergency lane except in the cases set out by law. A driver must not use it to pass a queue, reach an exit sooner, or continue a journey while the carriageway is congested. Keep the lane clear for emergencies and authorised operations.

If a genuine vehicle fault or sudden illness makes it impossible to continue safely, move to the emergency lane or the nearest available emergency bay as soon as possible. Make the vehicle visible and follow the required safety steps. Stop only for as long as the emergency requires, then seek assistance or continue when safe.

A narrow exception when traffic is queued

The Code provides a specific case for a queue: a driver may use the emergency lane to reach an exit, but only beginning from the advance sign located 500 metres before that exit. This does not permit using the lane to pass the queue and rejoin the motorway farther ahead.

Follow the signs and do not block an emergency vehicle. If the exit is not the one you need, remain in the ordinary traffic lanes. The exception is limited to leaving the motorway at the indicated exit, not to gaining time or changing lanes at will.

What to do after stopping

When an emergency forces a stop, use the designated lane or bay and take precautions to warn approaching traffic. Avoid standing in a live lane or walking along the carriageway; use the protected side and contact roadside assistance through the available channels.

An emergency stop is different from a convenience break. For a normal rest, continue to a service area or parking area. If the vehicle can be moved safely, do not leave it in the emergency lane longer than necessary to resolve the immediate problem.
