How to set a parking disc

Set the disc to your arrival time as directed by the sign, and observe the parking limit without moving the time forward.

A parking disc records when you started parking in a time-limited space. The permitted duration and practical requirements are those shown on the signs.

Set it to your arrival time

When you park in a space where a disc is required, check the sign first: it may specify the maximum stay, days and times when the limit applies. Set the disc to your arrival time as instructed on the device and leave it visible from outside. If the space requires payment or another permit, the disc does not replace it.

Do not round the time forward to gain extra minutes or change the disc while the car remains in the same parking space. Its purpose is to show when the vehicle was left there. Moving the pointer or repositioning the car in the same space to renew the time may be treated as evading the limit.

Read the whole sign

A sign may specify a different duration on certain days or at particular times. Check the arrows marking the regulated area and whether other signs apply to the whole row or individual bays. Setting the disc correctly does not make it lawful to stay beyond the permitted time.

If a sign is missing, obscured or unclear about which side of the road it applies to, choose a space with clear rules. You can report the problem to the council once parked, giving the location. Do not stay beyond the limit while you seek clarification: uncertainty does not extend the maximum stay.

Plan when to return

Set a reminder on your phone after parking, without using it while driving. If you expect to stay longer, choose a car park that allows it. Check whether the area becomes chargeable or changes its rules at another time, as a disc may only be required during part of the day.

Set the disc to your arrival time in the way the sign requires, usually showing when parking began. Place it behind the windscreen so it can be read from outside. Do not move the time forward during the same stay to exceed the permitted limit.
