Italian category A practical test: how the braking exercise works

The motorcycle braking exercise is part of the Italian A test; practise its current layout with your instructor.

The braking exercise belongs to the Italian motorcycle practical test, but its exact procedure and dimensions depend on the category and current Ministry instructions. Prepare on the appropriate motorcycle with an instructor, and do not rely on measurements from an old guide or practise emergency stops on a public road.

What the exercise is meant to assess

The category A practical test includes a vehicle-control phase as well as riding in traffic. The braking exercise is one of the controlled-area tasks described by the Ministry's instructions. Those instructions and the motorcycle category determine the exercise; a distance remembered from a video is not proof that it applies to your test.

The examiner observes whether you can control the motorcycle and follow the required path and signals. In supervised lessons, your instructor can identify the current layout, the motorcycle assigned for the test and the order of exercises. For example, do not assume that an A1 setup or an older course diagram matches an A2 or A test.

Prepare with the right motorcycle and supervision

Practise in a suitable training area with an instructor who can demonstrate the exercise and correct your posture, speed and use of the controls. Repeat only as directed and stop if the area, surface or motorcycle is unsuitable. Do not create a braking drill in a car park open to traffic or try to prove the manoeuvre by braking hard on a public road.

Before the appointment, ask your driving school or the Motorizzazione what instructions and equipment apply to your category and session. Theory study can help you remember signs and obligations, but it cannot teach motorcycle balance or braking technique. Those parts of the practical test require supervised riding practice.

Frequently asked questions

Is there one braking distance for every A-category test?

Do not assume so. The procedure depends on the category and current instructions for the test course. Confirm the setup with your driving school.

Can I practise emergency braking by myself on the road?

No. Learn and practise the test exercise in a suitable area with an instructor and the appropriate motorcycle.
