Italian category B road test: stopping safely when needed

If a hazard appears during the Italian B test, assess space, slow under control and stop where you do not endanger others.

During the Italian B test, keep the vehicle under control and choose a speed suited to the road and visibility. If a hazard appears, assess the space, warn traffic behind when possible and slow or stop under control. Do not improvise emergency braking on an open road; practise it with an instructor.

Prevent a sudden stop

Article 141 requires drivers to adapt speed to road, traffic, visibility and vehicle conditions so they can make necessary movements safely. Looking ahead helps you spot a queue, obstacle or crossing early. Keep a safe following distance: if the vehicle ahead brakes, you will have more room to slow down without reacting sharply.

If a hazard appears suddenly, the response depends on what is around you. Brake with force appropriate to the situation and keep control of the steering; do not swerve into another lane without checking it is clear. If you can reduce risk by slowing gradually, do so. No universal pressure or distance replaces a real assessment of grip and speed.

Stop in a suitable place

If the situation requires stopping, choose a place that does not block a bend, junction, crossing or traffic lane when you have room to do so. Signal as soon as practical and watch traffic behind. In an immediate emergency, reducing the direct risk comes first; then follow the relevant procedures and instructions from your instructor or authorities.

Emergency braking should be learned with an instructor, in an appropriate place, vehicle and conditions. Do not deliberately create an obstacle or sudden stop on a public road to prepare. In a lesson you can work on following distance, hazard recognition and releasing the brake so your response stays controlled and appropriate to the situation.

Frequently asked questions

Will I have to perform emergency braking during the test?

Do not create an emergency. The test observes vehicle control and responses to real conditions. Specific practice belongs with an instructor in a controlled setting.

How can I avoid braking sharply when traffic queues?

Keep a gap and look beyond the vehicle ahead so you notice slowing traffic earlier. Adjust speed to the road conditions.
