Italian category B road test: reading priority at intersections

Read signs and lanes before entering an intersection on the Italian B test, and keep it clear if you cannot exit.

On the Italian category B road test, priority at an intersection depends on signs, traffic lights and the Highway Code, not simply on which vehicle is closest. Slow down, work out who must pass and enter only if you can cross without blocking the junction.

Read the controls in order

The practical test assesses driving in real traffic and respect for priority rules. As you approach, slow down enough to read vertical signs and stop lines, then check traffic lights, vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians. A stop sign requires you to stop where indicated; at a give-way sign, let vehicles with priority pass. Follow a traffic officer's directions when an officer is controlling the junction.

If no different control applies, Article 145 gives priority to traffic coming from the right. This does not let you enter without checking traffic or ignore vehicles already in the intersection. For example, at an unsigned junction, wait for a car approaching from your right. Even if the road is otherwise clear, do not enter when a queue on the far side would prevent you from clearing the junction promptly.

Show that you are checking

Keep the sequence orderly: observe, assess, signal an intention where required, and proceed only when the movement is safe. Do not focus on one side alone; check cross traffic and vulnerable road users, as well as the road you will join. In a turn, also follow the lane markings and signs governing that movement.

If the examiner gives a direction, listen but do not follow it in a way that breaks a rule or creates danger. You can ask for it to be repeated and continue safely. Missing a turn is better than forcing a gap. Ask your instructor to explain any reading error after a practice drive so you can correct a specific habit.

Frequently asked questions

Does traffic from the right always have priority?

It is the general rule when no different control applies. Signs, traffic lights, an officer or specific rules can change who must give way.

Can I enter if I may have to stop in the middle?

No. Article 145 prohibits entering if you cannot proceed and clear the intersection promptly. Wait until there is enough space beyond it.
