Italian category B road test: handling a reverse park

When reversing during the Italian B test, keep checking around the car and stop if you lose sight or a risk appears.

For a reverse park on the Italian B test, move slowly, watch the area around the vehicle and use mirrors and direct vision. If you lose track of what is happening or a pedestrian appears, stop and continue only when the move is safe.

Before reversing

Parking and reversing may be assessed in the practical test. Before moving, identify the space, check that stopping is allowed and look for pedestrians, bicycles, vehicles and obstacles. Set your seat and mirrors before setting off so you can stay in control without taking your attention away from the road.

Select reverse only after checking the surrounding area. Move at a very low speed and alternate between mirrors and direct views; parking sensors, if fitted, are an aid, not a substitute for observation. If another road user enters the space, stop. Do not rely on a memorised path: starting position, vehicle size and available room differ from one parking space to another.

Correct without rushing

You may need to make a correction. Stop, check again and adjust the angle only when you understand what is happening ahead and behind. Article 154 requires you to make sure a manoeuvre creates no danger and to give way to traffic moving normally when reversing. Do not hit the kerb or force others to move around you; if the space is unsuitable, ask your instructor how to stop and reposition.

Practise with your instructor in controlled places and in different spaces, not between moving vehicles. The assessment concerns control and safety, not a number of attempts stated here. After each manoeuvre, identify where you lost visibility or how much room you left; that gives you a clear point to work on in the next lesson. Article 154 requires you to use the indicators throughout the manoeuvre and switch them off when it is complete.

Frequently asked questions

Can I rely only on mirrors while reversing?

No. Mirrors help but do not show the whole area. Alternate checks and use direct vision; stop if you cannot verify the space.

Should I continue if I get the angle wrong?

No. Stop, check the area and correct calmly only if it is safe. If someone enters the area, stop reversing.
