Italian category B road test: how to approach a roundabout
On the Italian B test, read signs, yield rules and lane arrows before entering or leaving a roundabout.
A roundabout may be part of an Italian category B road test, but its circular shape does not establish who has priority. Follow the signs and ordinary intersection rules. Approach at a suitable speed, observe traffic and choose a lane using the markings and your intended exit.
Read the intersection before entering
The Ministry's practical-test programme expects candidates to handle special road situations, including roundabouts. That does not mean every test must include one particular roundabout: the route and traffic conditions vary. During lessons, practise reading signs, lane arrows and road markings before reaching the circular carriageway. Reduce speed enough to understand how the entry is controlled.
Do not assume that traffic already circulating always has priority merely because the road is circular. Look for a yield sign, stop sign or another control. Where no sign sets a different priority, Article 145 of Italy's Highway Code applies the general rule of giving way to traffic coming from the right. For example, at an entry with a yield sign, let circulating vehicles pass; if the signs establish another arrangement, follow those signs.
Choose a lane and leave safely
The correct lane depends on arrows, signs and the intended destination; there is no single lane rule for every roundabout. Stay in the lane shown and do not cut across another driver's path to reach an exit. Before changing lane or leaving, check that the move is safe, signal in good time and keep observing mirrors and traffic. If there is no safe gap, follow the markings and take another permitted circuit rather than forcing your way out.
During the test, the examiner can observe caution, priority, signalling and vehicle control. You do not need to speed up to hide hesitation. Practise roundabouts with different lanes and exits alongside your instructor, then explain which signs you read and why you chose your path. The app can help with road rules, but the practical manoeuvre needs supervised driving.
Quiz Patente Ufficiale helps you review Italian priority rules and road signs.
Frequently asked questions
Who always has priority at a roundabout?
No one has priority solely because they are already inside the circle. Follow the signs; if no different control applies, the general right-hand priority rule applies.
Must I use the inner lane to take an exit?
There is no universal answer. Follow the arrows and lane markings, and signal and check before moving. Practise the layout with your instructor.
