Italian BE practical test: preparing to reverse with a trailer
Practise BE reversing on the required car and trailer combination with an instructor before the Italian test.
The Italian BE practical test uses a category B vehicle and a trailer that meet the prescribed requirements. Reversing is a specific skill to prepare with an instructor on an appropriate combination; the test is not a lesson to learn alone on an open road.
Know the test combination
The Ministry procedure sets requirements for the vehicle combination used for BE. Confirm the documents and characteristics of the car and trailer with your driving school before practice. The reversing task is evaluated in that context, so advice based on a short light trailer may not apply to the test vehicle.
In supervised lessons, your instructor can show how small steering inputs affect the trailer, how to observe the space around the combination and when to stop and correct. Practise the route and positions used for the test. If the trailer begins to move away from the intended line, pause and follow the correction method taught rather than making a sudden steering movement.
Build a controlled routine
Before reversing, check the area, the path and the people around the vehicle. Move slowly enough to make corrections and stop whenever visibility or space becomes uncertain. Your instructor can guide you through mirror use and safe observation for the specific combination; a camera or one mirror does not replace checking all relevant areas.
Do not practise on a public road or in a car park open to traffic without the instructor and suitable vehicle. Ask the school which BE exercises and course layout apply. Quiz Patente Ufficiale can help with theory revision, but trailer movement and reversing for the practical test require supervised lessons. For BE, MIT requires a combination with a maximum authorised mass above 4,250 kg and a trailer no heavier than 3,500 kg.
Quiz Patente Ufficiale helps you review Italian theory.
Frequently asked questions
Can I learn BE reversing from a diagram alone?
A diagram can explain the idea, but the trailer responds to the vehicle and steering input. Practise the required manoeuvre with an instructor and the test combination.
Should I keep moving if I lose sight of the trailer's path?
No. Stop safely and use the correction method taught by your instructor before continuing.
