Refuelling
Should you switch off your car when refuelling?
Yes. Switch off the engine and apply the parking brake before refuelling, and follow the site’s signs and instructions.
Switching off the engine and applying the parking brake are precautions to take before refuelling. Read the signs and the specific instructions for the forecourt too.
Switch off the engine before getting out
Park beside the pump, switch off the engine and apply the parking brake. If you are towing a trailer or using a site with special procedures, follow the operator’s instructions. Do not leave the engine idling while someone else uses the pump.
This reduces risks associated with vapour, hot surfaces and the vehicle moving unintentionally. Do not smoke or use naked flames, and obey the signs. When you finish, return the nozzle and close the fuel cap before restarting. In an emergency, use the marked button and alert staff.
Follow the instructions for that type of forecourt
Procedures for petrol and diesel differ from those for LPG or methane. Gas refuelling may involve specific connectors, safety devices and access requirements; read the signs and ask an attendant for help where required. Do not connect equipment you do not recognise.
At a self-service station, use the specified terminal and call system. Fire-safety rules for self-service natural gas stations require displayed instructions and specific procedures; for petrol and diesel, follow the signs and instructions at that particular site. Stop refuelling if there is a leak, a strong smell or a malfunction.
Set off only when you have finished
After removing the nozzle, return it to its holder and check that the cap is closed. Make sure no cable or other item is left near the pump and that the receipt or transaction is complete. Only then start the vehicle and leave, following the site’s arrows and speed limits.
If you accidentally left the engine running but nothing else happened, switch it off and finish the task in line with the operator’s instructions. If you spill fuel or notice a lingering smell, do not start the vehicle: report it and let staff deal with it. Site safety comes before a quick fill-up.
Quiz Patente Ufficiale offers chapters, exam-style quizzes and error review to help you revise road-safety rules.
Frequently asked questions
Does this apply at an attended pump too?
Yes. Switching off the engine is a precaution at attended pumps as well; follow the attendant’s instructions and the signs.
Can I leave the engine running if it is very hot or cold?
No. Switch off the vehicle while refuelling. If you need climate control in the cabin, wait somewhere safe and restart only after you have finished and returned the nozzle.
