How to inflate your tyres at a petrol station

Use the pressure recommended by the manufacturer, set the inflator correctly and check every tyre when cold if possible.

At a filling station, set the inflator to the pressure specified for your car and expected load, then check each tyre with the gauge. If the tyres are warm, do not deflate them to the cold-pressure figure; check again later.

Find the correct figure before connecting the inflator

Check the handbook or the vehicle’s label: the table may give different pressures by axle, tyre size and load. Do not use the number printed on the tyre, which is a limit and not necessarily the pressure recommended for the car.

Select the correct unit on the compressor display and check the number entered. If you do not understand the controls, ask staff rather than trying random values. If the vehicle is loaded for a trip, use the pressure specified for that load and distribute luggage as the handbook directs.

Inflate and check one tyre at a time

Remove the valve cap and attach the hose securely. Some machines inflate or release air automatically to reach the set pressure; others require you to press a button and monitor the reading. Follow the instructions printed on the machine and do not leave the hose stretched or under tension.

Compare the displayed reading with the specified figure. Add air in short bursts if the pressure is low; if it is high and the tyre is cold, use the release function as instructed. Repeat for all the tyres, not just the one that looked low, and replace each valve cap.

If you checked after driving

Driving heats the tyres and can increase pressure. If you reach the station after a journey, note the readings but do not reduce them to match the cold figure. Check again once the car has been stationary for the period specified in the handbook or ACI guidance.

A tyre that keeps losing air, has a cut or shows a bulge needs professional inspection. The compressor does not repair a puncture or make a damaged tyre safe. If you notice a rapid loss of pressure or unusual handling, do not continue at speed; seek assistance.

Frequently asked questions

What pressure should I set on the pump?

Use the figure specified by the manufacturer for your model, fitted tyres and load. Check the vehicle label or handbook; there is no single pressure for every car.

Can I deflate a tyre after inflating it while warm?

Do not reduce a warm tyre to the cold-pressure figure. Let it cool and check again; if you adjusted it as an emergency measure, verify it as soon as possible using the handbook.
