Can you refuel with LPG at a self-service pump?
LPG refuelling rules depend on the filling station. Follow its signs and attendant’s instructions; do not improvise connections or steps.
Before using an LPG pump, check that self-service is authorised and available at that station. Procedures do not automatically carry over from one site to another.
Check the service at the filling station
Do not assume every LPG station allows refuelling without assistance. Whether it is available, how it works and its hours depend on the applicable rules and the site. Read the signs and ask staff whether the pump is in self-service mode and what steps to follow. If the instructions are unclear, do not connect the nozzle or operate the controls.
LPG is dispensed using specific equipment and connections. Follow only the procedure shown at the site; do not adapt instructions from another pump. Do not force the nozzle or connector, use damaged parts or fill beyond the automatic cut-off. If the vehicle or equipment has a fault, stop and ask for help.
While refuelling
Follow posted restrictions and the attendant’s instructions, including rules on mobile phone use or passengers near the vehicle. Switch off the engine and do not smoke. Do not leave the pump unattended, disable safety devices or try to fix a leak or jam with tools.
If you notice a strong smell, a leak or a connector that will not release normally, do not force it. Alert the attendant immediately, move away if instructed and follow the site’s emergency procedure. If there is immediate danger, call the emergency services; do not operate equipment that could create an ignition source.
When you have finished
Complete the shut-down procedure as directed by the station and check that the vehicle cap is back in place. Keep the receipt and check the quantity and displayed price before paying. If the meter or payment does not match, report it to the operator without tampering with the pump.
In Italy, self-service LPG refuelling is allowed only at authorised stations and under the required procedures. Check that the pump displays instructions and has the equipment for self-service; if an attendant must operate it, do not use the nozzle yourself. Do not smoke, switch off the engine and never force the connector.
