Accompanied driving in Italy: how many passengers may be in the car?
At 17, only the young driver and authorised accompanying person may be in the car during practice; display the GA sign as required.
During Italy’s accompanied-driving scheme, only the 17-year-old at the wheel and the authorised accompanying driver may be in the car. Friends, relatives or other passengers are not permitted. The vehicle must display the GA sign as required. Before setting off, check that the accompanying person, authorisation and vehicle all match.
Only the authorised accompanying person may ride along
Accompanied driving is practice for a minor, not a trip with passengers of the driver’s choice. The scheme allows the young driver and the person authorised to accompany them; no one else may be in the car. A sibling or parent who is not the authorised accompanying driver cannot join the practice as a passenger.
Before using the car, check that the person beside the young driver is listed and meets the licence and experience requirements. If more than one person is listed, each must meet the conditions individually. Having any adult in the passenger seat does not make otherwise prohibited driving lawful.
Display the GA sign and check before departure
The vehicle must display the GA sign clearly, in the position and form set by the ministerial rules. The sign identifies a vehicle being used for accompanied driving; it does not replace the personal authorisation or the required documents. If the vehicle changes, ask the Motor Vehicle Office or driving school what must be updated before the next practice session.
This passenger rule is different from the rules for a novice who has already obtained category B. The current Article 117 does not create a general passenger ban just because someone is a novice. Here, the restriction comes from the specific scheme for accompanied driving at 17. Check that the young driver has completed the required course and that the conditions for practice remain valid.

Frequently asked questions
Can I take a friend along while accompanying the minor?
No. During accompanied-driving practice, only the minor driver and the authorised accompanying person may be in the vehicle.
Is the GA sign enough to drive?
No. You still need valid authorisation, the required course, an eligible accompanying driver and compliance with the other conditions. The sign identifies the car but does not replace them.
