Before a European road trip: documents and vignettes
Carry valid licence, vehicle and insurance documents; check each country's toll, vignette and equipment rules before travel.
A European road trip requires more than a valid driving licence. Carry the licence, vehicle registration and valid insurance evidence, then check the official road and toll rules for every country on the route. Some countries require a vignette or toll payment, while equipment and local restrictions also vary.
Prepare the documents for the driver and vehicle
For an ordinary Italian licence, check that it remains valid and covers the vehicle category. Carry the original licence, vehicle registration document and proof of insurance. If the vehicle is borrowed or rented, verify written permission for cross-border use and register all authorised drivers. If you travel outside the EU, check whether that destination requires an international permit or official translation.
Use official sources for each country and each leg. Confirm that liability insurance extends to the full route and that any Green Card or other proof has the correct dates and country coverage. Check the vehicle's required safety equipment, environmental-zone rules and any restrictions relevant to your vehicle type. A rule for one country does not automatically apply to the next.
Check tolls and vignettes by country
Road charges use different systems: some motorways have toll booths or electronic tolling, while some countries require a time-based vignette for certain roads. Confirm which roads require payment, where a vignette must be purchased or displayed, and how a digital registration works. ACI's travel guidance can point to country information, but verify current conditions with the destination's official transport authority before setting out.
Do not use a remembered price or an old vignette duration: charges and validity periods can change. Save proof of purchase and check whether the toll product is linked to a specific number plate or period.
