Where can I find how much my car may tow?
Compare the registration document’s trailer and combination masses; do not infer them from engine power.
You cannot determine a car’s towing capacity from engine size or horsepower. Check the vehicle’s approved data on its registration certificate or Italian Documento Unico. Compare the permitted trailer mass and maximum combination mass with the trailer’s authorised figures. The licence category is a separate calculation based on the maximum authorised masses of both vehicles.
Distinguish the document fields
The Italian Documento Unico combines circulation and ownership information; on a registration certificate, European fields identify different masses. In particular, F.2 is the maximum permissible mass in the country of registration and F.3 is the maximum permissible mass of the combination, where recorded. O.1 is associated with the maximum braked trailer mass and O.2 with the maximum unbraked trailer mass. Read the field labels and units on the actual document.
The trailer's authorised mass must comply with what the towing vehicle and combination permit. These figures answer how much this specific car may tow; they are not the same as the licence category. For that, add the car and trailer maximum authorised masses: B, B96 or BE depends on the total and trailer type under Italian law.
If a figure is missing or unclear
The position and availability of information can depend on the document or type approval. Do not treat a blank field as unlimited permission, and do not use a manufacturer's marketing figure instead of the vehicle record. Ask the manufacturer, dealer, registration agency or Motorizzazione to confirm, giving the exact version and registration number.
Also compare load and axle limits, and make sure the tow bar and trailer are compliant. A lower maximum combination mass does not cancel a separate towing limit. If you travel with a loaded trailer, consider actual weight and load distribution so you do not exceed technical limits, regardless of the licence category you hold.
