Can I leave my car in an electric-vehicle charging bay?

Charging bays are subject to parking rules and signs. Check whether you may stay after charging and for how long.

Whether a charging bay is available depends on the signs, Highway Code and local rules. Do not confuse ordinary parking with occupying a charging point.

Read the sign and road markings

Bays reserved for charging are marked and may have specific conditions. Before parking, check the symbol, any additional panels, the hours and the operator’s instructions. Spaces do not all work the same way: some are reserved for electric vehicles while charging; others may have additional council or contractual limits.

The Italian Highway Code regulates parking spaces and charging points, but the duration and operation also depend on local signs and rules. Do not assume the bay automatically becomes unrestricted parking as soon as the battery reaches your preferred level. Check whether the council requires you to vacate within a set time or the operator charges an overstay fee.

End the session and move the car

Before starting, read the terms in the app or on the charger and check how the session ends. Set a realistic reminder to return to the vehicle, especially if parking is time-limited. Do not leave the cable taut or obstruct the pedestrian route; disconnect it as instructed by the manufacturer and operator.

If the charger is not supplying power, do not occupy the space indefinitely without checking the rule. Contact the operator’s support service and, if necessary, move the car to an ordinary parking space. A faulty charger does not automatically give you the right to park there: the signs and road rules still apply.

Avoid unexpected costs and inconvenience

Check the price of electricity, parking charges and any idle fees in advance, as they vary. The current information is that displayed by the operator and relevant authority. Keep receipts and useful screenshots if the transaction does not complete correctly.

After connecting the car, check whether the sign permits parking only while charging and whether it sets a maximum time. Move the vehicle as soon as possible when charging is complete; a connected cable alone does not prove that the session is active. Read the operator’s terms for any post-charge occupancy fees.

Frequently asked questions

Can I stay as long as I like after charging?

Not necessarily. Check the sign, council rules and operator’s terms.

Does a faulty charger make the bay unrestricted?

No. Parking remains subject to the site’s instructions; move if you are not authorised to occupy the space.
