When can you obtain an unrestricted A motorcycle licence?
Direct access to category A starts at 24, or at 20 if you have held A2 for at least two years.
You may access category A directly from age 24. Alternatively, the Ministry lists access from age 20 if you have held A2 for at least two years. A gradual route through an authorised course is also available; check current Ministry requirements and procedures.
Direct access or after A2
Category A allows you to ride motorcycles without the A2 power limit. According to the Italian Transport Ministry, direct access to the category A test is available from age 24. Someone who has already held A2 for at least two years may access it from age 20. Both the age and A2-holding-period requirements must be met for this route.
It is not enough simply to have held A2 at some time or to have turned 20: the required period of possession and the licence records matter. If your licence was renewed, converted or replaced, ask the relevant office which date counts. You still need to follow the applicable procedure and pass the practical test, unless you use the separate gradual-access route.
The gradual route with training
Italian rules also provide gradual access to category A through a specific course at an authorised driving school, if the requirements are met. This route is distinct from direct access by examination: it requires regulated training and its own administrative process. Check the current Ministry page for course content, duration, vehicles and documents because operational instructions can change.
For example, a 21-year-old who has held A2 for one year has not yet met the two-year condition for direct access at age 20. They must wait until they meet it or check whether the gradual route applies. Do not enrol on the basis of a forum post or an old information sheet.
