Which motorcycles can you ride with an A2 licence?
A2 covers motorcycles up to 35 kW and 0.2 kW/kg, not derived from a version with more than twice the permitted power.
With A2, you may ride motorcycles with maximum power of 35 kW, a power-to-weight ratio no greater than 0.2 kW/kg, and no derivation from a version producing more than twice the maximum power. Displacement alone is not decisive: check all approved figures.
Check all A2 requirements together
The Italian Road Code and Transport Ministry define category A2 through several technical conditions. Power cannot exceed 35 kW; the power-to-weight ratio must be at most 0.2 kW/kg; and the motorcycle cannot derive from a model producing more than twice the maximum permitted power. A restricted power figure on the registration certificate is not enough if the original version exceeds the applicable threshold.
Engine displacement alone does not divide A2 motorcycles from those outside the category. A large-displacement motorcycle can qualify if it meets every condition, while a smaller engine may exceed the permitted power. Power, ratio and configuration must relate to the correctly approved version. An unrecorded modification does not create a right to ride the motorcycle.
Check the exact version, not just the model name
Check the registration document, power in kW and power-to-weight ratio; if the motorcycle is restricted, also verify the power of its original version. If the necessary figure is unclear, ask for an official technical sheet or confirmation from the Motor Vehicle Office. A sales advert is not a substitute for type approval.
For example, a motorcycle lawfully restricted to 35 kW may qualify for A2 if its ratio is also within 0.2 kW/kg and its original version does not exceed twice the permitted power. A 34 kW motorcycle with a ratio of 0.21 kW/kg does not meet the requirement. Also check any restriction recorded on your licence, such as one linked to taking the test on an automatic motorcycle.

Frequently asked questions
Does displacement decide whether a motorcycle is A2?
Displacement alone is not decisive. Maximum power, power-to-weight ratio and the original-version limit all matter.
Can every motorcycle restricted to 35 kW be ridden with A2?
No. It must also meet the 0.2 kW/kg ratio limit and the rule about the original version, and the restriction must be lawful.
