Is category C enough to transport dangerous goods?

The licence authorises the truck; professional work may also require CQC and an ADR certificate for the load.

No. Category C authorises the heavy vehicle, but professional goods transport may also require a goods CQC; if the load falls under ADR, the relevant professional ADR certificate is also needed. The type of goods, quantity, packaging and tank determine the required qualification. These are separate credentials.

Licence, CQC and ADR have different roles

The driving licence identifies the vehicle category you may use: C or CE, for example, depending on the truck and trailer. CQC covers professional goods transport in cases set by law. The ADR certificate of professional competence (CFP ADR) provides specific training to drive vehicles carrying dangerous goods under the agreement. Holding a C licence does not automatically prove that CQC or ADR is valid.

Not every truck load is dangerous goods, and not every tank has the same requirements. If goods are classified under ADR, a basic certificate and specialist modules may be needed, such as tanks or explosives, depending on the class and transport method. Do not infer the qualification from the vehicle’s appearance alone.

Check the exact transport before departure

Ask the safety manager or ADR safety adviser to classify the goods, check quantities and transport method, and identify the required training and certificates. MIT lists courses and exams for the ADR CFP, including basic and tank categories. Check the validity dates for the licence, CQC and certificate, and the documents that must travel with the load.

For professional transport, CQC may be required even when the vehicle and trailer categories are correct. Conversely, ADR does not replace the C/CE licence. Before taking the job, confirm that each credential covers the assigned vehicle, work and cargo. Do not rely on the requirements for a different delivery made in the past.

Quiz Patente Ufficiale helps you review Italian licence categories and theory; confirm CQC, ADR certificates and cargo requirements with your employer or safety adviser.

Frequently asked questions

Does every tank truck need an ADR tank certificate?

The vehicle type alone is not enough to decide. Check the goods classification, tank and applicable ADR rules with the responsible adviser.
