Can I carry a passenger in a microcar with an AM licence?

With AM, you may carry a passenger only if the quadricycle is approved for two people and you are at least 16.

Yes, but only if the microcar is approved for a passenger and the driver has turned 16. Holding AM does not make every vehicle a two-seater: check the authorised seats in its documents.

Two conditions must both be met

The Italian Ministry of Transport states that an AM driver may carry a passenger only in a vehicle approved for that purpose and only after turning 16. Both conditions apply at the same time: reaching the required age does not permit a passenger in a vehicle approved for one person, and having two seats does not remove the age requirement.

Many light microcars have two seats including the driver’s, but the visible presence of a passenger seat does not prove that it is authorised. Check the registration certificate or vehicle document for the approved number of seats. If only one seat is listed, you cannot carry a passenger. Do not add a seat or belt to create another place: the legal configuration is the one approved and recorded for that vehicle.

An example and a check before setting off

A 15-year-old driving a two-seat AM microcar cannot carry a passenger yet. They may do so after turning 16, provided the vehicle is still approved for two people. A driver who is already 16 but is using a single-seat version must travel alone. If the vehicle has more seats, also comply with the applicable occupant safety requirements.

Before leaving, check two things: the driver’s age and the number of seats recorded in the vehicle documents. If unsure, ask the owner or seller to show the approval. Do not rely on photographs of a model, a different trim or information about another version. Rules for L6e light quadricycles do not automatically transfer to L7e vehicles; the class and the vehicle’s licence requirements remain decisive.

Frequently asked questions

Can I carry a friend in an AM microcar at age 15?

No. An AM driver must be at least 16 to carry a passenger, even if the vehicle is approved for two people.

If I can see two seats, may I take someone with me?

Not necessarily. The second seat must be authorised in the vehicle documents; a fitted seat alone does not prove approval.
