Which licence and qualifications do I need to drive an ambulance?
Check mass, seats and service: the licence, CQC and any exemption depend on the vehicle and its use.
There is no single licence for every ambulance in Italy: vehicle category, maximum authorised mass and seating determine whether B, C1, C or another category is needed. CQC may be required if the service is professional transport subject to the qualification; the Ministry exempts vehicles actually used in emergency or rescue missions. The service and conditions matter.
Identify the vehicle’s category and specifications
A motor vehicle with a maximum authorised mass up to 3,500 kg and no more than eight passengers besides the driver may fit category B. Over 3,500 kg and up to 7,500 kg, a vehicle not designed for more than eight passengers may fit C1; above 7,500 kg, consider C. If the number of seats and vehicle design place it in a passenger-transport category, D1 or D may apply. Check the ambulance’s registration document and type approval.
The vehicle’s name or livery is not enough to select a licence: layouts, mass and type approval differ. Also check any trailer and codes recorded on the licence. The driver must hold the correct category before relying on any professional-qualification exemption.
CQC depends on the actual service
The Ministry lists vehicles used for emergency service or rescue missions as exempt from CQC. That exemption depends on the statutory use; it does not automatically cover every health transport, scheduled trip or vehicle called an ambulance. For other professional services, passenger or goods CQC may be required depending on the vehicle and activity.
Before a shift, ask the service manager which rule justifies any exemption and check the licence, vehicle documents and required authorisations. For non-urgent transport, own-account use or mixed duties, do not carry an emergency exemption over without checking the nature and conditions of the mission. If uncertain, ask the Motorizzazione or competent authority.
