Motorhome over 3,500 kg: do you need a C1 licence?

If a motorhome is authorised above 3,500 kg and up to 7,500 kg, C1 is the reference category; check its registration document.

Under Italian rules, a motorhome with a maximum authorised mass above 3,500 kg exceeds the ordinary category B limit. If it is no heavier than 7,500 kg and meets the passenger limits, C1 is the relevant category; above that threshold C may be needed. The authorised mass in the documents matters, not the motorhome’s actual weight on a trip.

Use the authorised figure, not a weigh-in

Category B covers vehicles with a maximum authorised mass up to 3,500 kg. C1 covers vehicles above 3,500 kg and up to 7,500 kg, designed for no more than eight passengers besides the driver and outside categories D1 or D. For a motorhome, read the maximum authorised mass in the registration document.

Authorised mass is different from empty mass, the weight measured during a trip or the remaining payload. A motorhome authorised at 3,700 kg remains outside the ordinary B limit even if it currently weighs less. Above 7,500 kg, category C may apply, subject to the passenger capacity and vehicle classification.

Trailers and conversions need separate checks

Also check the permitted trailer mass and trailer documents: the licence for the motorhome alone does not settle the combination. Some combinations may require an extension such as C1E or another category. Permanent equipment and modifications that affect vehicle data must be approved and reflected in the documents.

For example, a motorhome registered at 3,850 kg and designed for no more than eight passengers besides the driver requires C1 if it belongs to that category. Being empty or having years of experience with B does not change the authorised limit. An allowance for some alternative-fuel goods vehicles does not automatically apply to a privately used motorhome. Before buying or hiring, check the authorised mass and required licence for that exact vehicle.
