At what age can I get an Italian category C licence for work?
C normally starts at 21; an ordinary initial CQC course may allow it from 18 under MIT conditions.
The ordinary minimum age for an Italian category C licence is 21. MIT provides a route from age 18 if the candidate completes the initial goods CQC training and obtains the qualification before the practical test. With accelerated initial CQC training, professional driving in category C is permitted from age 21 under the statutory conditions.
The ordinary rule and the route from age 18
Category C covers heavy motor vehicles within its passenger limits; the ordinary minimum age is 21. MIT describes an earlier route from age 18: the candidate must show enrolment in the goods CQC course and, before the practical driving test, complete the initial training and obtain the CQC. Starting a course or already holding category B is not enough.
C1 is separate: MIT lists 18 as its ordinary minimum age and covers vehicles over 3,500 kg up to 7,500 kg, subject to its other conditions. Do not confuse C1, C and professional qualification. A route that lowers the age can impose conditions on the training type and permitted activity.
Confirm the course and work route before enrolling
Legislative Decree 286/2005 sets professional driving ages with CQC and distinguishes ordinary and accelerated initial training. For category C, professional driving from age 18 is linked to the ordinary course; with accelerated training, the stated threshold is 21. Other categories and services have their own rules, so do not transfer the C route to D or C1.
Before paying for training, check the current MIT requirements for the category, course type, order of tests and CQC issuance. Ask the school to confirm the route that fits your age and intended job. Category C authorises the vehicle class; CQC is still required when the professional activity is subject to it.
Quiz Patente Ufficiale helps you review Italian category C theory and exam questions; check the current CQC course and age pathway with MIT or a driving school.
Frequently asked questions
Can I get category C at 18 without CQC?
The ordinary minimum is 21. The route from 18 requires ordinary initial goods CQC training and issue of the qualification before the practical test.
Does category C1 have the same minimum age as C?
No. MIT lists 18 for C1; C normally requires 21, with the statutory CQC route providing an earlier pathway.
