Do I need a passenger CQC to drive a scheduled bus in Italy?
Professional bus transport generally needs the right D licence and passenger CQC; check the service and any exception.
To drive a scheduled bus professionally in Italy, you need the correct licence category and, in the cases set by law, a passenger CQC. Category D authorises the vehicle; the passenger Driver Qualification Card (CQC) qualifies the professional activity. Holding D alone does not authorise every service, and the requirement cannot be decided from the word “bus” without checking its use.
Identify the vehicle before the service
Category D1 covers vehicles designed for no more than 16 passengers besides the driver and no more than 8 metres long. Category D covers buses outside the D1 limits. Check passenger capacity and vehicle characteristics in the registration document. A smaller bus may fit D1 only when both the passenger and length limits are met.
For professional passenger transport using D1, D and related categories, the Ministry says CQC is required in the cases set by law. A public scheduled bus service is professional transport: normally the driver needs the correct D or D1 category and a valid passenger CQC. The licence and qualification are separate credentials.
Do not extend an exception automatically
CQC exemptions apply only to specific circumstances, such as certain emergency vehicles or non-commercial activity that meets every legal condition. A public employer or municipal vehicle does not automatically make a service exempt. The Ministry also states that school-bus drivers are not exempt merely because transport is carried out on own account.
Before driving, verify the category, authorised service, required CQC and its validity with the employer, transport authority or Motorizzazione. Age requirements also differ by category and professional route: D1, D and CQC can have different conditions.
Quiz Patente Ufficiale helps you review Italian D and D1 theory; for bus work, check the licence, passenger CQC and service requirements with your employer.
Frequently asked questions
Is category D alone enough to work on a scheduled bus?
Not always. Professional passenger transport may also require a passenger CQC, depending on the service and the law.
Are school-bus drivers exempt from CQC?
No. The Ministry says school-bus drivers are not exempt just because the service is on own account.
