Is a category C licence enough to drive a truck for work?
Category C covers the vehicle; professional goods transport may also require a valid goods CQC.
A category C licence entitles you to drive category C vehicles, but it is not always enough for professional goods transport in Italy. When the activity falls within the cases set out by the Ministry, you also need the goods Driver Qualification Card (CQC), a separate professional qualification that must remain valid. The service, vehicle use and any statutory exception determine the requirement.
The licence and CQC answer different questions
A driving licence identifies the vehicle category you may drive: category C covers heavy motor vehicles within its mass and seating requirements. The goods CQC qualifies the driver professionally. The Ministry says it is required for professional goods transport with vehicles for which C1, C and related trailer categories are needed, in the cases set by law.
For example, holding a valid C licence lets you drive category C vehicles for permitted uses, but does not automatically authorise a third-party haulage service that requires CQC. Even when you transport goods for your own business, assess the activity and your role rather than looking only at who owns the cargo.
Check the service and any exception
The rules provide exemptions for specific situations, including vehicles used for emergencies or rescue missions, certain armed-forces and civil-protection uses, and particular non-commercial or equipment-transport activity. The conditions are precise: the Ministry notes, for example, that the own-use exemption does not automatically apply to an employee hired as a driver.
Before starting a job, ask the employer or competent office which rule applies to that exact activity. Check that the licence and CQC show the required categories and are both valid. The CQC is renewed through periodic training; it does not replace category C, and category C does not replace a CQC when one is required.
Quiz Patente Ufficiale helps you review Italian licence categories and theory; ask your employer or the competent authority whether a specific service requires CQC.
Frequently asked questions
Can I always work as a truck driver with category C?
No. Certain professional goods-transport activities also require a valid goods CQC. Check the service and any applicable exemption.
Does a goods CQC replace category C?
No. The licence covers the vehicle category; CQC is a separate professional qualification required for specified activities.
