Do I need D1 or D to drive a school bus in Italy?
D1 covers up to 16 passengers and 8 metres; professional school-bus drivers also need passenger CQC.
Category D1 covers Italian buses with no more than 16 passengers besides the driver and a maximum length of 8 metres; vehicles outside those limits may require D. Professional school-bus driving also requires passenger CQC: the Ministry says school-bus drivers are not exempt from CQC, whether transport is on own account or for a third party.
D1 and D depend on seats and length
Check the vehicle's registration data. D1 covers vehicles designed for no more than 16 passengers in addition to the driver and no more than 8 metres long; it may also tow a trailer within the limits listed by the Ministry. D covers vehicles designed for more than eight passengers that do not fit D1. Counting only the seats in use on a particular trip is not enough: the vehicle's design and recorded characteristics matter.
The Ministry lists 21 as the ordinary minimum age for D1 and 24 for D. The D minimum may be reduced to 21 for a specified passenger-CQC route, completed before the practical test with the CQC issued. Age and requirements depend on the pathway and current rules, so verify the process before enrolling.
School-bus work also needs professional qualification
The Ministry says school-bus drivers are not exempt from CQC in cases where the former CAP KD was required, whether the service is run on own account or for a third party. For professional work, therefore, holding the correct D1 or D category does not replace the passenger CQC. These credentials have different purposes: the category covers the vehicle, and CQC qualifies the activity.
Before starting, verify mass, passenger capacity, length, use and vehicle documents with the employer and Motorizzazione. If the service or vehicle changes, requirements may change too. Do not rely on the “school bus” label alone; check the registration certificate and the qualification required for that service.
Quiz Patente Ufficiale helps you review Italian D and D1 theory; for school-bus work, check the licence, passenger CQC, vehicle and service with the employer.
Frequently asked questions
Does a school bus with up to 16 passengers always require D1?
