Foreign driving licences
I hold two licences: which can I use after becoming resident in Italy?
Citizenship alone does not decide: the issuing country, validity, residence and any prior licence conversion matter.
Do not choose based on citizenship. In Italy, the issuing country, validity, residence and any conversion history matter. A non-EU/EEA licence allows ordinary driving only within the applicable conditions and deadlines; if it cannot be converted, you may need to obtain an Italian licence by examination.
Residence and the issuing country determine the rules
The Italian MIT distinguishes EU/EEA licences from those issued in third countries. Valid EU/EEA licences are treated as equivalent to Italian licences, with specific rules for documents without expiry or with validity longer than the European standard. For a non-EU/EEA licence, Article 135 generally allows driving in Italy for up to one year after acquiring residence, if the document is valid and accompanied by the required international permit or official Italian translation.
After that period, conversion depends on whether Italy has a reciprocity agreement with the issuing country. If conversion is not available, MIT guidance says the driver must obtain an Italian licence through examination. Holding two nationalities does not change who issued a licence or create a conversion agreement.
Check whether a licence was itself obtained by conversion
MIT says that some foreign licences cannot be converted in Italy if they were themselves issued in exchange for a third-country licence that is not convertible here. If you hold two documents, or one replaced another, establish their origin and issue dates before driving or applying. Do not assume the most recently issued document is automatically the one recognised.
For example, an Italian citizen with a non-EU licence must follow the rules based on the issuing country and residence, not the passport. If they also hold an EU licence obtained by converting a third-country licence, the origin and eligibility must be checked. Ask the Motorizzazione for a case-specific review of the documents.

No. The issuing country, validity, residence, recognition and any conversion history matter.
Can every licence already converted in another country be converted in Italy?
No. MIT excludes some licences derived from third-country licences that cannot be converted in Italy.
