Does the licence number change after a replacement?

The document number can change when a replacement is issued, especially to replace a licence that was lost, stolen or destroyed. Do not assume the old number remains valid: check the new card and use its updated details for insurance, online services and applications. Check categories and entitlements separately.

A replacement is a new card

The Italian Portale dell’Automobilista distinguishes replacement for loss, theft, destruction or damage, and says the procedure depends on the document’s circumstances. The number is one of the licence’s identifying details; Ministry guidance on duplicate numbering describes a specific numbering system for replacement documents issued by the Central Operations Office. Do not assume that the serial printed on the previous card will be kept.

The licence category and expiry date are separate from the document number. When the new card arrives, check the holder’s details, categories, codes and dates as well as the number. If you find an error, ask the issuing office to correct it before using the information for an important application.

Update records that use the old details

After receiving the replacement, update profiles that store the old number, such as the Portale dell’Automobilista, insurance services or other procedures that request your licence details. Do not send a photo of the card to unnecessary recipients; share it only through trusted channels and when needed.

For example, if the points service does not recognise the licence because your profile is still linked to the old number, update it with the new details and follow the service’s official instructions. If the replacement followed renewal or reclassification, also check that the new dates or categories match the procedure: the change may involve more than the number.
