How long do I have to exchange a non-EU licence in Italy?

There is no universal four- or six-year deadline: Italy's agreement with the issuing country sets the applicable conversion terms.

Italy does not apply one four- or six-year conversion deadline to every non-EU licence. The one-year driving period after acquiring Italian residence is separate; eligibility, application deadlines and conditions depend on the current reciprocal agreement with the issuing country. Check the MIT country-specific table and agreement text.

The driving period and conversion deadline are different

A non-EU/EEA licence may be used in Italy for up to one year after residence begins, if it remains valid and is accompanied by an international permit or official Italian translation. That is a driving rule under Article 135; it is not a statement that every licence must be converted within one year or that every conversion request has the same longer deadline.

Conversion depends on whether a reciprocal agreement applies to the country that issued the licence and on that agreement's clauses. The MIT page provides the current country list and procedure. Some agreement texts set a period such as four or six years, while others have different conditions or effective dates. Read the provision applicable to the specific issuing authority and licence category.

Use the current agreement, not a remembered general rule

The 2023 MIT circular described four-year periods in certain agreements and six-year periods in many others, subject to the individual terms. That circular is not a substitute for the updated MIT table or a later agreement. A list can change, and an agreement may enter into force on a future date; do not treat it as effective before its stated date.

Check your residence date, licence issue and expiry dates, country, category and any restrictions. Contact the competent Motorizzazione office to confirm the application documents and whether you may continue driving while it is processed.
